TER·RAR·I·UM

| No comments:
If I want to display an indoor plant it needs to describe my personalities; fun, nerdy, beautiful, low maintenance. Anything that is slightly beyond low maintenance will result in the death of the plant and my paranoia. I am so bad that I still need my husband's help in taking care of my aloe vera plant. So when I told him that I wanted to do some kind of terrarium/succulent combo and excitedly announced, I have the perrrrrfect spot for it! he only chuckled. I repeat, he chuckled.

That's why I am dedicating this post for him. I'll release the landscape goddess inside me so he can thank me later!

Now, what kind of vase do I want? Which plants do I like? What materials do I need? Is there any special soils I have to get? Wait, how do I buy the plants? Hmmm, if only it's as easy as finding these inspirations....What to do...What to do......

40 Days Aboard, Cord Stored, and Love Poured

| No comments:
Do you have any set of traditions that you need to do with a newborn or after giving birth?

Well, I do. Here are some of things that I can think of:

40 Days. Probably this is the most common thing that I've heard. After giving birth, the women are supposed to rest for 40 days. No work, nothing. The mother is supposed to be helped by the family members or by a hired helper. She just needs to rest. No shower or shampooing is allowed during this time, until your body heals completely.
Honestly, as much as I will sound like a spoiled person, I do miss having people around who are willing to help. I sometimes feel that the culture in here is about being independent that you have to take care everything by yourself. One more thing that makes me missing home.

Ayam arak (Medicinal chicken/ Mayou ji). This is a type of food that is cooked for the mother to help her gain her strength back. It's a chicken. Like a chicken soup (but not American chicken soup) with sesame oil (to keep body warm) and with some kind of traditional medicine.
My mother made me this almost every day minus the traditional medicine, kind of hard to bring it over here.

Bodyshaper/Corset. I wore a corset bodyshaper the next day after giving birth, to help with my tummy. It's hard at the beginning, but getting better each day. My mother also put a mix of slaked lime and cajuput oil on my tummy before the corset, to help shrink the tummy back.
Not going to discuss this part too much, because I don't want to be deemed as a body conscious person. All I can say is that this helps me.

Umbilical cord. After the umbilical cord is off, it's supposed to kept inside a box. Then, when you more children, you keep all of them in the same box. That way, the children will get along and bond strongly. The fifth's cord is stored inside the red box. I don't display the actual thing just to be safe.
This is probably where people will roll their eyes. However, I "believe" this just because my mother keeps my brother's and my cords together and look! I think we are very close and get along well :)

Chinese zodiac. Of course this is common too :) The fifth was born under the snake year, the same as my father. His Engkong (Grandpa is one of Chinese dialect), almost born on the same day too! My mother bought the 24K gold necklace as a keepsake.

One month celebration. This is also one of the common traditions. We celebrate the newborn's one month anniversary and to give thanks to his well-being. We invited everybody (literally everybody) to come to celebrate with us and in turn we hand them gift box (usually food type). We also usually shave the newborn's head (I was shaved too) to celebrate, although this particular practice has gradually declined.
Since nobody really around during his 30 day mark, we celebrated by ourselves (basically my mother and I, because the fourth was working and did not get home until 7pm ish anyway). It sounds kind of sad, but I'm glad we did it. I bought cupcakes and cake the previous day (well, I ordered the cake a whole week before) and the day was full of preparation. We made 'tumpeng' the cone shaped rice, we fried chicken, and we dyed eggs red. I also took his picture while laying him on my clothes and the fourth's clothes. It represents the hope that his fortune will be descended from his parents' fortunes.

But the most important thing of all is the love surrounding him. He's a lucky one! :)

I may forget some, but my mother knows a lot because her mother also did the same thing for her after she gave birth. I do like tradition and hope to keep them alive. So, what traditions do you have that's different or would like to be added here?

Yes, I did shave his head. I had to beg my husband and trade in 100 hours of work to help him around the house.

An Open Note 2014

| No comments:
I was going to post pictures from our first Mother's Day happening. But stuffs got in the way and I thought it's too late now. So I'm just going to leave it with this two pictures. Anyway, I have decided that I am going to write JV a short note each year in this blog (hopefully it's still alive 10 years from now). I also have been writing him personal letter through email. So if any of you would like to write him something, you can do so to johnrobertreimer@gmail.com or jrreimer.v@gmail.com (I can't decide which one I like better hence 2 addresses). Although I am not sure yet when I am going to give him the password and yes, I login to his email accounts, so if there is a hateful email, I'll delete it.

p.s. Why does JV's hair look reddish here?

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

| No comments:

I see a monkey looking at me.

Introducing Olé. JV's beloved stuffed animal. Well, we just got him on Saturday and JV seemed to like it. I guess beloved is an exaggeration.

However, my husband and I could not agree on his name.
*I like something cutesy. Like Olé. Also a nod to the upcoming World Cup 2014 (Olé Olé Olé)
*He likes something, in his own words, more American. Like Frank. Frank The Tank. Frank 'The Tank' Kaminsky.

But, I won. How did I win it? By rapping this:
This is JV and I have a monkey named Olé
He's cute and he lives with me, okay?!
I don't care 'bout the bad things they say
'Cause nothing's stopping me today

Peace out!

Oreo Rice Krispie Treats

| No comments:
When JV was taking a nap yesterday, I quickly ran down to the kitchen, as if a ghost was chasing me (Indonesian idiom), and made this treats. I found the recipe while browsing during one of those nighttime pumping sessions. It can be found here.

As usual, my creation does not look as good as the original recipe. I think it's because I use my Ninja to chop the oreos instead of just breaking them into chunks. Not too bad.

It makes me want to make Oreo milkshake next. Hello sugar!

The beauty in others

| No comments:
I decided on what I'm giving up for Lent while browsing for my own quote compilation. Or I should say, what I want to gain, not give up. The one with the red circle mark. The sign of a beautiful person is that they always see beauty in others. If that's the definition of being beautiful, then I am ugly. I always struggle to find that beauty in others. It is damn hard.

Right now, my mindset is on the top left quote. I used to walk into a room full of people and wonder if they liked me...Now I look around and wonder if I like them. I only see what I don't like in people, what drives me crazy. So here I am, admitting that I am ugly, that I need to improve the way I live this life. Especially now that someone so pure and innocent depends on me and will one day look up to me for guidance.

Have a blessed season of Lent!

Come What May

| No comments:

Dear JV,
You were such a good boy during the baptism.
You slept all through the process and did not cry once.
When the priest poured the water, you were startled a little bit,
but instead of crying,
you stretch your arms high in the air.

May your path be lighted
and guided
by the Holy Spirit

Papa and Mama loves you always, come what may
